Word has come to Beisho that we have lost an old friend and teacher of Shorin-ryu, Charles "Mike" Hixson of Columbus, Ohio. Mike was one of the first to welcome Papa Chris to the karate community when he arrived in Columbus in 1972. For several years, Mike and Papa Chris jointly owned and operated a dojo in Grove City, Ohio. Mike was a very early student of Matsubayashi-ryu, having started in the early 1960s under Gary Tiktin, the second American promoted to black belt by Master Nagamine Shoshin, founder of Matsubayashi-ryu. Mike was widely respected throughout the mid-west as a teacher, coach, referee, and tournament judge. He left behind many well-known black belt students and martial arts friends, as well as a loving family. Beisho sends its sincere condolence to the Hixson family and to his karate family. More information will be provided when it becomes available.
